West Philadelphia, its boundaries, as defined by the University City District and the City of Philadelphia, are: the Schuylkill River to the east; Spring Garden Street, Powelton Avenue, and Market Street to the north; Civic Center Boulevard, University Avenue and Woodland Avenue to the south; and 52nd Street to the west. These boundaries encompass the neighborhoods of Cedar Park, Garden Court, Spruce Hill, Squirrel Hill, Powelton Village, Walnut Hill, and Woodland Terrace. The boundaries also encompass several historic districts and the zip codes 19104, 19139, and 19143.
University City, the academic hub for some of Philadelphia’s finest universities, was an ideal location for University of Pennsylvania faculty of the surrounding universities to live. Other institutions of higher education in the area included Drexel University and the University of the Sciences. With the growth of these schools and increase in population, University City’s landscape changed into distinct residential and academic areas:
The eastern area of University City is home to the Penn and Drexel campuses, top-notch medical institutions, including Children’s Hospital of Philadelphia, Hospital of the University of Pennsylvania, Penn Presbyterian Medical Center, and 30th Street Station. It is also home to Penn Park, World Cafe Live, Penn Museum, the Institute of Contemporary Art, and Powelton Village & Mantua neighborhoods.
The western area and most residential area of West Philadelphia has many eclectic neighborhoods including Cedar Park, Spruce Hill, Overbrook, and Centennial District, which is famous for the Philadelphia Zoo, Mann Music Center, and the Please Touch Museum. West Philadelphia is widely known for its large Queen Anne row homes with wrap around porches, bay windows, and ornate columns and trim work. The neighborhoods are saturated with community parks and tree-lined streets, independent shops, and a diverse restaurant scene.
